The mite, small Hasmonean coin is ancient, is also known as "The Lesson of the widow's mite" in which Jesus is teaching at the Temple in Jerusalem. In the story, a widow donates two small coins, while wealthy people donate much more, yet this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she from her poverty, has contributed all she had.
 
The anchor that appears on the Hasmonean coin served as a symbol of coastal cities — a place of trade, movement, and life on the edge of the sea. But the anchor did not symbolize stopping, but the ability to remain stable even in the face of the waves.
